How Thick Should a Concrete Driveway Be?
A residential concrete driveway carrying passenger vehicles is commonly built at four inches. Five to six inches with upgraded reinforcement is used where trucks, RVs, trailers, or repeated delivery traffic will cross, and at aprons where public traffic transitions onto the property. The correct thickness for any given driveway is set by intended loading, soil condition, and drainage rather than by a single universal number.
Why four inches became the baseline
Four inches carries passenger vehicle loads adequately when it sits on a properly compacted base. The number is a floor, not a target, and it assumes everything underneath the slab was done correctly. On a poor base, four inches fails quickly and five inches fails only slightly less quickly.
When to go thicker
Thickness increases when loading increases. Any of the following is a reason to move up:
- RV, boat, or trailer parking
- Work trucks and dual axle vehicles
- Frequent delivery or service vehicle traffic
- Aprons and street transitions
- Turnaround areas where vehicles pivot under load
- Expansive or poorly draining soils
Thickness cannot rescue a bad base
Adding an inch of concrete over uncompacted soil buys very little. Support under the slab is what prevents the bending that cracks it. Spending the same money on base depth and compaction produces a longer lasting driveway than spending it on thickness alone.
What to ask your contractor
Ask what thickness they plan to use, what loading it is based on, and what the base looks like beneath it. If the answer is a number with no reasoning behind it, you are being quoted a habit, not a plan.

Can I pour four inches and add more later?
No. Adding concrete on top of an existing slab creates a bonded overlay that inherits every crack and movement below it, and it raises the surface at the garage and the apron.
