Why Base Preparation Matters More Than the Concrete
A concrete driveway is only as good as what supports it. Uniform, compacted support prevents the slab from bending under load, and bending is what cracks concrete. Subgrade evaluation, removal of unsuitable material, aggregate base placed in lifts, and mechanical compaction do more for service life than any upgrade to the concrete itself.
Uniform support is the goal
A slab spanning a soft spot behaves like a beam and cracks. The purpose of base work is to make support consistent across the entire driveway so no part of the slab has to span anything.
Why lifts and compaction matter
Aggregate dumped in one thick layer cannot be compacted through its full depth. Placing it in thinner lifts and compacting each one produces density all the way down. Driving equipment over loose material is not compaction.
What gets removed
Topsoil, organic material, pine duff, saturated soil, and buried debris all belong off the site rather than under a slab. Organics decompose and leave voids, and saturated soil loses bearing capacity.

How to verify it happened
Ask for the base depth in writing, look at whether material is placed in lifts, and watch for a compactor rather than a truck tire. The base is the part of the project you can still inspect before the concrete hides it forever.

Frequently asked questions
How deep should the base be under a driveway?
It depends on soil condition and loading. Poor or expansive soils and heavier loading both call for deeper sections. The depth for your driveway should appear in your comprehensive proposal.
Can concrete be poured directly on soil?
It can be, and it frequently was in older construction. On expansive or poorly draining soils it produces the differential movement and panel cracking we are routinely called to replace.
