Does a Concrete Driveway Need Rebar?
Reinforcement does not stop concrete from cracking. It holds a slab together across cracks that do form, transfers load between sections, and limits how far a crack opens. Rebar and welded wire reinforcement are both legitimate when sized for the slab and supported on chairs so they stay in position during placement. Reinforcement lying on the ground contributes very little.
What reinforcement actually does
Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension. Reinforcement carries the tension. When a shrinkage crack forms, correctly placed reinforcement keeps the two sides tied together and level rather than letting them separate and step apart.
Position is the whole argument
Steel placed near the bottom of a slab does almost nothing for a driveway carrying surface loads. It has to be held at its design depth by chairs or supports before concrete arrives. The practice of laying mesh on the ground and pulling it up during the pour is unreliable, and it is the most common reinforcement defect we find in failed driveways.
Rebar or mesh
Rebar on a grid is typical where loading is higher, such as RV pads, aprons, and thicker slabs. Welded wire reinforcement is appropriate for many standard residential slabs. Fiber reinforcement addresses plastic shrinkage during curing but does not replace structural reinforcement.

Frequently asked questions
Can a driveway be built without reinforcement?
It can be, and thin unreinforced slabs are common in older construction. They tend to separate at cracks and step apart over time, which is exactly the failure mode reinforcement prevents.
Does fiber reinforced concrete replace rebar?
No. Fiber helps control plastic shrinkage cracking while the concrete is curing. It does not provide the structural tension capacity that sized and supported reinforcement provides.
