The Driveway King Standardâ„¢

Driveways fail for a small number of predictable reasons: the ground underneath was never prepared, water was never given a way to drain away from the slab, the slab was too thin for the vehicles it carries, the steel was not where it needed to be, the concrete mix was wrong for our winters, or the joints were an afterthought. The Driveway King Standard is our answer to each of those failures, written down so you can hold any contractor, including us, to it.

  1. Principle 01

    We check the ground before we plan the slab

    We never plan your driveway until we know what it will sit on.

    We check the ground underneath (the subgrade) for firmness, moisture, and clay content, and dig out anything soft, wet, or organic instead of just packing over it. On long driveways we check the ground along the whole run, because one test spot does not tell you what a 300 foot drive is sitting on.

    A perfect slab on bad ground is still a bad driveway. Nearly every failure we get called out to replace started below the concrete.

  2. Principle 02

    We decide where water goes before anything else

    We plan drainage before we talk thickness, mix, or finish.

    We build in slope away from your house, smooth transitions at the street, ditches, curbed edges, and drains where needed. If your roof or gutters are dumping water onto the driveway or the ground beneath it, we reroute it.

    Water is behind most of what damages a driveway: soil swelling, base washout, freeze and thaw cracking, and surface flaking. Control the water and you remove most of the risk.

  3. Principle 03

    We build the gravel base in layers

    We spread the gravel base in layers and pack each one down with a machine.

    How deep the base needs to be depends on your soil and what will drive on it, not a default number. We spread the gravel in layers thin enough to pack down all the way through, compact it evenly, then grade it to the finished slope before we set up forms.

    A slab needs even support underneath it. Gravel dumped in one thick pile and driven over packs down unevenly, and uneven support is what causes the ground to settle unevenly and crack the concrete.

  4. Principle 04

    We set the thickness based on what drives on it

    We set slab thickness by what will actually drive on your driveway, not by habit.

    Four inches is our standard for a driveway carrying cars and light trucks. We build five to six inches with heavier steel where trucks, RVs, trailers, or regular delivery traffic will cross, at the street apron, and anywhere vehicles turn and put extra weight on one spot.

    A slab that is too thin for what drives on it will crack no matter how good the concrete is.

  5. Principle 05

    We hold the steel in place before the pour

    Our steel sits on supports (chairs) before any concrete arrives.

    We size the steel for your slab and its load, then hold it in place on chairs so it stays at the right depth the whole time we pour. Steel dropped on the ground and yanked up mid pour rarely ends up where it should.

    Steel sitting at the bottom of a slab does almost no work. Where it sits is the difference between reinforcement and decoration.

  6. Principle 06

    We use a mix built for Colorado winters

    Every driveway gets an air entrained mix built for freeze and thaw and for winter deicers.

    We choose the strength and air content for outdoor exposure. Adding water on site to make the pour easier weakens the concrete and increases shrinkage, so instead we plan around temperature, wind, crew size, and delivery timing.

    Air entrainment gives freezing water tiny pockets to expand into instead of pushing the concrete apart. Without it, a Colorado driveway loses its surface within a few winters.

  7. Principle 07

    We plan and cut the joints early

    We lay out joints to match the shape of your driveway and cut them at the right time.

    Joint spacing is set by how thick the slab is. We lay out panels to the shape of your driveway rather than for convenience, add separate joints at your garage and other fixed structures, and cut early enough to control where the concrete shrinks instead of chasing cracks after the fact.

    Concrete shrinks as it cures. Joints decide where that shows up. Cut too late or spaced randomly, and you get random cracks instead.

  8. Principle 08

    We finish the surface for winter traction

    Every driveway gets a finish built for grip in snow and ice.

    Our default is a uniform broom texture, applied at the right time and in one consistent direction. Overworking the surface pulls water and fine particles to the top, leaving a weak layer that flakes off. If you want a decorative finish, we write it down before we pour.

    You walk on this driveway in ice and snow. A slick finish is a safety problem, and it is usually a sign the surface was overworked.

  9. Principle 09

    We protect the concrete while it cures

    We manage the cure. We do not leave it to the weather.

    We protect curing concrete from drying out too fast in sun and wind, and from cold that stops it gaining strength. Cold weather pours get extra ground protection, insulated covers, and a longer cure schedule. When conditions will not let the concrete cure properly, we tell you to wait.

    Most of a slab's long term strength is decided in the first few days. Concrete that dries out instead of curing never reaches full strength.

  10. Principle 10

    We put it all in writing and walk it with you at the end

    Every decision above shows up in your contract, and we walk the finished driveway with you.

    We explain everything in person, follow that up with a comprehensive proposal, and finally lock everything in with a transparent contract before the project starts. Base depth, thickness, steel, mix, joint layout, finish, drainage, and cure schedule are all spelled out before we start. If something changes once we start digging, you get that change in writing before we move forward. When the work is done, we walk the driveway with you and hand over care instructions for the first year.

    A verbal promise is not a plan. Putting it in writing protects you, and it is the only way a standard like this one can actually be held to.

After the pour

Caring for a new driveway

First 48 hours
Keep foot traffic, pets, and equipment off the slab. Barricades stay in place until we remove them.
First 7 days
No vehicles. Keep sprinklers off the new surface and away from the slab edges.
First 28 days
Passenger vehicles only after day seven. Keep heavy trucks, RVs, dumpsters, and equipment off until day 28.
First winter
Use no deicing products of any kind. Remove snow mechanically. Sand provides traction without chemical attack on the surface.
After the first year
Apply a quality penetrating sealer and reapply on the manufacturer's schedule. Keep joints sealed so water stays out of the base.
Ongoing
Keep gutter discharge off the driveway, keep landscape irrigation from saturating the edges, and use deicers sparingly if at all.
