Concrete Driveway Drainage Explained
Drainage decides driveway service life more than any other single factor. Water that reaches the ground underneath softens it, saturates clay soils so they swell, and freezes under the slab in winter. A driveway needs positive slope away from the structure, a clean transition at the apron, and drainage structures wherever slope alone cannot carry water off the surface.
Slope is the first tool
A driveway needs enough cross slope and longitudinal slope to move water off the surface without becoming uncomfortable to walk on or park on. Slope is set by measurement from the garage to the street, not by eye.
The garage entry problem
On a downhill approach, everything the driveway collects heads for the garage. Interception with a trench drain, a grade break, or a swale above the garage is the correct answer, and it needs to be designed before the slab is formed.
Roof and irrigation water
Downspouts discharging onto or beside a driveway, and irrigation saturating the edges, are two of the most common causes of edge settlement. Both are cheap to fix and expensive to ignore.
Drainage worth adding
Where slope is not enough, the scope adds hardware:
- Trench drains across the approach above a garage
- Swales to intercept runoff from surrounding ground
- Curbed edges to keep water on the slab and off the shoulder
- Culvert transitions on rural approaches

How much slope does a driveway need?
Enough to move water off the surface reliably without creating a scrape hazard or an uncomfortable parking angle. The specific grades come from measurements between the garage slab and the street.
Can drainage be added to an existing driveway?
Sometimes. A trench drain can be cut into a sound slab, and swales and downspout rerouting can be added around it. Where the slope itself is wrong, correcting it means replacement.
